Autumn is the season for pumpkin spice and all things nice, but you may have noticed more than just the leaves falling.
Twice a year (during autumn and spring) our bodies react to the change in temperature and as a result, we shed hair faster than normal. This includes our lashes!
Our bodies react to the drop in temperature and we shed lashes faster than normal, which is known as the Autumn Lash Shed. One eye has between 90 – 150 eyelashes and we lose around 2-5 lashes per day on average, during our lash life cycle. Our lashes shed in a continuous renewal cycle, so usually we don’t even notice them falling out. Seasonal lash shedding is usually more noticeable, which explains why you may have spotted a few more on your pillow recently, or on your fingertips if you have rubbed your eyes.
During winter, the colder weather, extreme conditions (heavier rain and wind, or moving from a cold to warm environment when going indoors) as well as central heating can dry hair out, which will in turn make them more brittle and more likely to fall out prematurely. We shed more hair as we move into the winter to make way for thicker hair growth that keeps us warmer. Nourishing and caring for our lashes in the colder months will help keep them healthy, so aftercare is a must!
During the Autumn Lash Shed, we lose more lashes than normal (lash loss happens faster). Fear not lash lovers, this doesn’t last forever! The shed usually lasts around 1-2 lash cycles (around 6 weeks) before things go back to normal.
Don’t worry, you’ll just need more regular infill appointments to maintain your beautiful results. Let your lash artist know if you’d like to bring your infill appointments forward. Another thing you could try is going for a slightly shorter length lash extension (or less dramatic curl than usual) to minimise any noticeable effects. Your lash artist will be able to advise what’s best. If you have LVL treatments, you may notice your lifted lashes shed more (especially as we move into the winter months) and fall out, as part of the lash life cycle. The reason for shedding has not been confirmed, but amongst theories are that we hold onto more hair in summer months to protect the skin, or that we shed more hair as we move into winter to make way for thicker hair growth that keeps us warmer.
Lash shedding is a completely normal process that speeds up during certain times of the year. There isn’t much we can do to stop it! But aftercare is super important.

Don’t stray from regular cleansing either; many people fear cleansing will cause their lashes or extensions to fall out, however gentle regular cleansing will help to maintain lashes and keep them healthy.
